The Kitsis lab has discovered unexpected connections between autophagy and mitochondrial function.  At the disease level, these connections appear to function in the final common pathway for heart failure.  At the fundamental biology level, they may be relevant to how eukaryotic cells evolved to “govern” mitochondria when these organelles transitioned from bacteria-like to endosymbionts.
