Depression is the most common and debilitating psychiatric disorder in the world. However, the precise mechanisms underlying depression remain largely unknown. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, which produced from arachidonic acid by the action of cytochrome P450s, have potent anti-inflammatory actions. These mediators are broken down into the corresponding diols by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). Accumulating evidence suggests that sEH plays a key role in inflammation, which is involved in depression. Today, I would like to discuss the role of sEH in the pathophysiology of depression.

Many meta-analyses show that the NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine is one of the most attractive antidepressants since this drug produced rapid-onset and sustained antidepressant actions in treatment-resistant patients with depression. Today, I would like to discuss about R-enantiomer of ketamine as a novel rapid and sustained antidepressant without side effects.
