Each cell type requires a specific number of mitochondria to meet its energetic needs. As loss of mitochondrial activity contributes to aging and pathologies including Parkinson’s disease and bacterial infection, it is important to to understand those stress response pathways in place to monitor and restore mitochondrial function. I will discuss one such pathway known as the mitochondrial unfolded protein response and explore its role during an acute mitochondrial dysfunction caused by pathogen infection and during prolonged mitochondrial dysfunction caused by deletions within the mitochondrial genome.
